This amazing land is the perfect opportunity for you to try to make a difference in this world, and at the same time gain valuable life experience and an international appreciated work experience that you can add to your resume.

Why Africa?

Although a beautiful and exciting place, abundant in natural resources, Africa is today one of the poorest and most underdeveloped continents. A 2003 survey initiated by the United Nations shows that the poorest 25 countries in the world are all African.

The causes of this high-level poverty are numerous and have augmented over the years: the rapid spread of deadly diseases, like HIV/AIDS and malaria, high levels of illiteracy, military conflicts and a corrupt politics. The instable economy has triggered many other negative consequences: malnutrition, hunger, unemployment and the degrading of the environment. These are just a few of the problems Africa has been confronting with for decades. If you choose to volunteer, Africa will probably amaze you and scare you at first, but it is definitely an experience worthwhile.

Other benefits include the chance to meet new and exciting people, some of whom can become contacts for developing a future carrier, expanding your horizons, learning new stuff, putting your skills into practice, making friends and, of course, at the end of the journey you will come back with a sense of satisfaction and personal growth. How can I be selected?

First of all, you need to keep in mind that, once you enroll as a volunteer, Africa is not a one week destination. You need to be aware that this is an experience that deserves more of your time. Also, you have to be at least 16 years old in order to be recruited into a program. Once you have figured that out, it is time to search what role you want to play in the program.
As a volunteer, you can choose to work in different areas of service: working with school educators, working in orphanages, supporting the people infected with HIV/AIDS, enhancing the quality of welfare, improving the quality of care for those with disabilities, helping the elderly. You will not work alone in any of the aforementioned tasks, as you will always be accompanied by professionals. Therefore, even if you don’t have a professional background or special skills, you can participate and help in all areas of interest. Your only desired “ability” is the motivation to learn new things and help others – that is why, as a volunteer, Africa welcomes you!

Where would I stay?

If you are thinking of becoming a volunteer, Africa might scare you in terms of accommodation. That is why we are stating here that this should not be your worry, because volunteering programs place people only at carefully selected host families. If this doesn’t appeal to you, there are also other forms of accommodation while in African communities: high school dormitories during the summer vacation. Usually, during these programs, volunteers are also provided with meals and bottled water. The costs of your accommodation and everyday meals are deducted from the initial fee you pay to the organization. In most cases, this fee also includes the health insurance and/or the travel costs. If you want to find out more about costs and what a volunteers program involves, see here: volunteers program.
